The solution was provided by Mark[MFST] in his posting near the top of this page: kill all the power supply, let the machine discharge internally, power the machine again. I never had trouble with my pc's past 2 years and no other software got installed or changed. Basically, in control panel, the external microphone is not showing under sound - manage audio devices - recording. What makes matters worse, I was using skype to video chat with my son while he was in Sydney, Austraila. I'm back up and running and my USB ports are restored and everything is working! Double-tapping the touchpad doesn't work either. I do have a Sony Vaio, so when I read your post I figured I wouldn't have anything to lose by removing the battery, and sure enough as soon as it do you know for sure the port on your laptop functions correctly.

Went out and bought a Microsoft mouse and tried to no avail. If that doesn't work I'm going to try to "up?"-grade to windows 8. Get a USB mic, a decent one. I even Uninstalled every last USB port from the System Properties and restarted, and still that didn't work.
