The solution was provided by Mark[MFST] in his posting near the top of this page: kill all the power supply, let the machine discharge internally, power the machine again. I never had trouble with my pc's past 2 years and no other software got installed or changed. Basically, in control panel, the external microphone is not showing under sound - manage audio devices - recording. What makes matters worse, I was using skype to video chat with my son while he was in Sydney, Austraila. Went out and bought a Microsoft mouse and tried to no avail. If that doesn't work I'm going to try to "up?"-grade to windows 8. Get a USB mic, a decent one. I even Uninstalled every last USB port from the System Properties and restarted, and still that didn't work.
